How many records a domain join cannot see had three defensible answers on one pull. Blank cells, values unusable under the internal rule, and values invalid under the cross-repository contract. None supersedes the others. Each answers a different question, and only the contract figure governs anything crossing the seam. One flag's setting swung an undercount across nearly two orders of magnitude on the same pull.
Put the normalisation or threshold in the same sentence as the number, and record the exact invocation.

02A Cohort Statistic Sitting at 0.91 of Its Frame Rate
A cohort statistic read as damning until the frame's own rate turned out to be nearly the same. The ratio was 0.91. A different statistic in the same table sat at 0.20 of the frame rate and was genuinely abnormal. Only the baseline separated the two. A third check reversed the expected direction outright, so the offered hypothesis failed backwards.
Ship every cohort share with the frame share and the ratio in the same row.

03Two Answered Checks Scored the Same as Nine
The fit score is a weighted average over the checks that could be answered, renormalized. That is correct and documented. A record with two of nine checks answered, both passing, scores 1.00, exactly like one that passed all nine. The confidence rule missed it, since it only asks whether each ranked dimension holds something. Sorted by score alone, the list opened with thin records above complete ones. Nothing errored.
Publish evidence depth beside a renormalized score, break ties on it, and read the list top down.

04A Retyped Definition Gave a Third Answer to One Question
I wrote a fresh title regex in a build script instead of importing the canonical predicates. They sit in a shared definitions module. Mine was word-bounded and defensible in isolation. It disagreed with the gated figure: the canonical net counts a field my copy knew nothing about. Three definitions of one concept give three answers, and no way to tell which was meant. Producers and verifier should share the import.

05A Matched Control Drawn From Units That Could Never Qualify
The first covariate-matched control drew from the whole donor pool without filtering. Consumer email addresses came back at roughly ten times the treated group's share. Those people were structurally ineligible at any covariate value. Treatment is defined by a company score, and they have no company to score. That is a common support violation, not an imbalance to average away. Only the balance table exposed it.

A brief read an account as a warm reopen. The CRM showed an engaged prospect with one old lost deal, and call summaries said renewal. Both were true. The counterparty held two roles at once, and the recent activity was our own side of the relationship auto-logged onto its record. Neither record was wrong. The schema had no field for direction, which belongs to each activity row, never the account.
Ask who the counterparty was and which way money went before reading recency as warmth.

A single path rendered two different surfaces depending on session state, and the analytics tool keys on URL. Both landed in one dataset. It surfaced only because one low-volume day happened to be entirely one of the two, and every other day the other buried it. Constant contamination keeps deltas usable and ruins absolute levels. Say which you are quoting. Read the element names in the data, not the totals.

08A Pooled Export Held Fewer Rows Than the Dailies
I advised replacing five daily exports with one range export, reasoning that pooling can only add. It does not. The range returned fewer distinct keys than the dailies, and dropped rows worth real events while keeping many single-event rows. So it was not a rank cut either. It undercounted the segment under investigation by two and a half times. Both totals matched exactly, and composition still differed.
Diff the union of narrow pulls against the wide one, and compare composition rather than sums.

09Percent-of-Page Bands Do Not Transfer Across Viewports
The tool reports scroll and attention as a percentage of page height. The same page is far taller on a phone than on a desktop. One section sits in a different band on each. Applying the desktop band to mobile data would have overstated reach by about half, silently and plausibly. Pin the layout per device. Read the geometry from the capture that produced it, rather than retyping coordinates.

A single day of attention data put most of all session time in one scroll band. That read as the most engaging thing on the page. Pooled across five days it held a couple of percent. Very few sessions ever reached it, so a single left-open tab dominated the average. The tell was a reconciliation. Per-band minutes summed to 71 times the tool's own active time per session.
Reconcile any time average against an independent time measure, and report the normalized share.

11Reproducing a List's Size Does Not Reproduce Its Membership
A rule-driven recipient list could not be enumerated. I rebuilt it from a predicate that matched its size to within 0.2%, then presented that composition as the list's own. The challenge was fair. Two sets of the same size can look nothing alike. I enumerated all 28 predicates inside the tolerance, and every proportion moved by under a point. The send's own bounce rate corroborated it without the model.
Test a reconstructed population for sensitivity across every predicate that fits, not only for fit.

12Recovering a Grading Rule by Fitting Its Own Output
A third-party fit grade blocked a decision for three weeks: its rules lived in a configuration UI nobody had read. Both the inputs and the grade sat in our own export. An additive model over the profile fields put nine in ten records within one grade. It re-encoded a definition we already owned. Nobody needed UI access. Reserve the human for authored intent, and for why the inputs stopped arriving.

The segmentation thesis was framed as right people, right message, better open rate. Our own history said otherwise. The better-fit group opened 6 to 8% less and registered 18 to 29% more. 17A Figure Nobody Could Use Because Its Grain Was Wrong
An eligibility ratio had existed for a day and could not be placed beside the working shortlist. The shortlist drops duplicate secondary records, so it is a different denominator. Intersecting the two moved the ratio by a fraction of a point, and only then was it quotable. No new measurement, no new evidence. The same result, stated at the grain people actually work.
Produce a figure at the grain it gets consumed, and never mix two grains in one sentence.

Widening a scoring model to a larger universe looked like a one-line change. One criterion used a boolean coercion that cannot return null. The engagement grade is one criterion inside one component. On paper, about a tenth of the score. 22A Floor Comparison Built to Argue Against Its Own Finding
A standing check compares a client-side count per page against an independent server-side count. The server-side number is the floor. That side covers strictly fewer sources, so the comparison leans against the finding. Pages still below the floor are hard to argue away. One invariant holds throughout: site totals are never reconciled, because the two totals count different populations.
Build the tailwind into the comparison so the finding survives its own skepticism.

A long-window pull ran against a row-capped API, then got aggregated to months. The cap truncated. Lower-volume months lost rows to truncation rather than to reality, and the headline read as demand collapsing across a multi-quarter window. A second pull set a per-month row budget and checked each month against the cap. The true declines were an order of magnitude smaller.

I counted content source files row for row against the authoring tool's own interface. They reconciled exactly. That precision made me confident enough to publish a URL figure I had never counted. Routes are generated from those sources at a multiple, so my number was wrong by that multiple. The correct one was already recorded elsewhere. A count can reconcile perfectly and still answer a different question.

I fixed a row cap that truncated a numerator, documented the rule, and shipped it. Eight days later the same defect landed on a denominator. A different API, a different cap, one unpaginated request that summed short. The published share was arithmetically perfect and wrong. I had pattern-matched the shape of the first instance instead of its principle. Ratios need the check on both sides.
Assert completeness on every aggregate query, and reconcile the dimensioned sum against an undimensioned total.

One channel posted high engagement with an average dwell of a few seconds. Its engagement rate climbed while its duration halved. Filter on engagement and that channel looks healthy. The platform marks a session engaged on a low page-view threshold, so a crawler qualifies with almost no dwell. Rank on duration. Keep engagement as a corroborator, and emit the exclusion as code beside the raw series.

Sessions recorded against a third-party hostname fell to near zero across successive years, so I concluded the source had gone dormant. A reading from the counterparty's own API said the opposite. When entrants carry the movement, report a level, not a trend.

A sibling team read a population split as backing a plan, because one segment leads on impressions. It does, in the larger of the two halves. A fit score treated a competitor's detected presence as evidence against the opportunity. It assumed the position was already occupied. When a signal infers absence, ask whether the data could show the opposite. The honest score is unknown, not negative.

After a scoring fix, many records landed in the top band. Only some had every component evaluable. The rest ranked on one axis worth under half the model, on the same zero to one scale. Renormalising over evaluable evidence is the right rule. It also puts thin and thick evidence on one axis. Emit coverage, confidence, and basis per row, and lead with the fully evidenced subset.

One segmentation produced three wrong numbers in a row. A bare three-letter token matched inside a longer job title and inflated the technical bucket sixfold. After a readiness criterion was corrected, the instinct was to re-derive every downstream qualified count. Three traps surfaced in one account-scoring build. Treating an open opportunity as a readiness signal is target leakage: the account ranks high because it is already in a deal. A marketing platform did produce a traffic report, which looked like proof it tracked the main site. Its pageview volume sat about 600 times below the analytics of record. It only ever saw the pages it hosted. Contact records settled it. The newest ones carried an offline acquisition source with an empty first-touch URL, so they arrived through a sync rather than a visit.

54Three Independent Axes to Prove a Page Was Never Tracked
Near-zero analytics history across a set of pages has at least three explanations. Low traffic, not yet public, or genuinely untracked. The data alone cannot choose. Search reporting settles whether the pages were public and indexed, because it works without the tag. Version history settles whether the tag was present and firing at all. When one property spans a migration, label each metric's source site before comparing.

55Search Clicks Cannot Prove a Gap on a Quiet Page
Every organic click is also a pageview, and pageviews include traffic search reporting never sees. A correctly tracked page therefore shows at least as many pageviews as clicks. Only clicks exceeding pageviews would prove undertracking. No page qualified. The dark pages carry almost no organic search, and the high-traffic ones were backend tracked before launch. Prove it with the root cause in code and a tracked control page.
Check that a page has enough search traffic before using a clicks versus pageviews gap as evidence.

56A Client-Side Redirect Turned Organic Traffic Into Direct
A page showed heavy organic clicks in search reporting but almost none in the analytics property. The same traffic landed under direct. Total sessions looked right. The cause was a redirect done with a meta refresh and a location assignment. A client-side hop rewrites the referrer to your own domain, which reads as a same-site self-referral. Move the redirect server side, where a 301 preserves the referrer.
Suspect misattribution, not lost tracking, when a high-organic page reports mostly direct at roughly the right volume.

57A DOM Parse Counted Nearly Twice the Real Links
Parsing an exported HTML file as one document returned nearly double the anchor tags a raw text search found. One unclosed div did it. The parser re-nested later page blocks inside earlier ones. Iterating pages then recounted the same links, and ancestor lookups attached far-back ids to unrelated content. Assert parsed counts against a regex count of the raw bytes. Slice at known boundaries and parse each slice alone.
Reconcile every parsed count against a raw text baseline and fail loudly on mismatch.

58The Deciding Attributes Were Never in the Text
After every text-derived signal had been applied, most rows still returned unclear. The model was not underpowered. Customer status, deal stage, and contact title decide those rows, and none appear in a transcript. They live in the structured system of record, and only that join resolves them. Budget the join before you promise coverage. Show the unresolved share with a neutral badge rather than padding it with heuristics.
